As stated in the shout box: This is an idea I thought of every now and then, because there are so many artists with quality stuff and only CD-R, online or even no publications that would deserve a broader publicity.
Should a critical mass be reached and enough enthusiasm be expressed (where I have no doubt concerning the spontaneus affirmations in the shout box), I would be willing to coordinate the project. |

So we started it. Thanks the boss for the initiative. Yesterday I was browsing for some comps to participate in and I thought why not a DAR comp, it is nice we'll probably spin the wheel.
Anyway, my project is called mytrip (http://myspace.com/mytrip)
I think mainly for a net release because not many labels are willing to release whatever kinds of compilations, besides if a lot of projects join us the compilation will become enough wide spread with the release uploaded in archive.org for example, what is more DAR is enough well-known so...

Would also be a big pleasure for me

I think the idea with archive.org is not bad.
Maybe, if this thing will grow, we find a label ditributing it.
Let' see what happens, hope there will be lots more people who join in

Not much dynamics in here, isn't it? Maybe I should write a mailing to all artists in question that have contributed music on DAR..? |

This radiostation is an oasis of real quality, truely interesting experimental music. I would be honoured to contribute in any form to all possible projects related to Dark Ambient Radio. So if you consider that my creation may sustain the standards then I'm totally in with the compilation project. |

Yo guys...
I received a mail and I must say, this is a great idea. I work for several labels (hardcore-industrial and darkcore music), but recently I made several dark ambient tracks....so, I can provied something. But, as managers say to me, releasing a cd these days is not worth it, because it comes expensive and people don't buy music at all, 90% music people get is from the internet, leeching, torrents and similar shit. It's most hard in the underground scene, not so many people listen to dark ambient and even those few who do, most of them also leech for net and on end, artist gets several € on account. So, if you think to distribute this world wide, please, think again. I would love to donate but I don't have money for myself....sorry....But, if this cd comes out, count me in.... I hope on end it wont be a net release....
Why don't leaders of this board contact some stronger dark ambient labels and bring out the idea to them?

The dark ambient scene isn't that big, I suppose. There is a limited number of labels that often have mailorders as well and I think most of them have heard of DAR before. When I study certain mailorder catalogues, I don't get the impression that they are very reluctant to include good stuff from different sources.
You may be right with people getting 90% of their music from the internet (DAR would be a good example, too ). But there are the others. People without an internet flatrate or who simply enjoy the tangible act of putting a disc in the player and browse the booklet or want to listen to their music in lossless quality. I wouldn't underestimate this group. And as a fact, they are completely complementary to DAR, which is the main cause I would see a CD publication as preferable.
We should keep distribution in mind, but first things first: Without a convincing quality and quantity of the product, we don't need to think of sending promo cds around. It still has to be done!
Surely, It seems that there is enough resonance so I could pick some tracks, put them on cd and declare them as DAR compilation. But I would rather have you all as a collective decide what to do and only structure things where absolutely necessary.
Btw., there are some other questions to be discussed:
- Should only unreleased or new or at least renewed stuff be allowed to be included on the sampler, or should it be preferred or have the same chance like the old works?
- Depending on it, the deadline: Would the end of the year be a good one, as fleisch would agree, or do you need some more time, or is the time even too long to put you under enough pressure to become productive?
- Legal considerations: Are you member of some collecting society or do you still have all rights to decide under what conditions your works are distributed?
- Selection process: Should each of you decide himself what track should be included or should there be several proposed tracks and a vote will decide? If so, who should be allowed to vote: only contributing artists? Or I even could arrange an online vote open to all website members.
Just to name some of the arising questions...

Now the idea becomes alive
Well, in my opinion it would be best, if artist only contributing unreleased or exclusive stuff like remixes, collabs or something like that. So it would be a more interesting record or even a rarity!
I also think that every musician - signed or unsigned - could send tracks to the admin and maybe he opens a vote.
The deadline for the end of the year would be okay to me...
I have some connections to labels and will try to manage anything. But of course I cannot promise something...
Hope this Thread will grow

My project is called Argentvm-112, the bad side however is that the shortest track I ever made is eleven minutes so I have no idea if that is suitable.
www.myspace.com/argentvm112
www.nihilarchitect.com/Music for the MP3's, also some things of my other projects.

The latter url is www.nihilarchitect.net. But I had no success finding any mp3s (using Firefox). Took a time till I figured out that something happened when I moved the mouse over the speckles. You must have some bandwidth restrictions. |

Just to give you the opportunity to collaborate with each other, I have created a fileden account, solely for the purpose to exchange music aspiring a place on the compilation. Go to
www.fileden.com
So if you have a raw track with an idea that needs some more spice or structuring and want to give others the opportunity to try their best: here is the place of exchange. Or you simply want to upload your champions to include in the compilation and provide your compilation buddys the opportunity to listen to it and say what they think.
In my opinion, should this compilation project lead to any collaborations, this would be one of the best outcomes. (I'm looking forward to the results of the All Sides & Svartsinn collaboration!)
I will send each of you, who showed interest in the project, the account name and password by personal message. Now it's up to you, if and how you use the space! |

the first compilation will be the one you will be judged.
put only the absolute peak material on it.
you know this already!

I'm really happy to see more people interested in releasing that comp. Dark Ambient asked few really important questions.
I think there should be a deadline so it will be easy to see who's really interested in working on that comp and who's actually b*tching around. Besides deadlines are sometimes stimulating and helpful against creativity crises
Also I think only new / unreleased work is suitable for the compilation. The goal is to present the current state of the artists connected to DAR right? Not to show something done back in the ages. Like eftos said this is the first DAR Comp and it should be contemporary and powerful.
About the tracks I think there should really be some kind of voting, but not for all members but maybe only among the people working on the comp. Because we want to surprise the listeners right? Not to release a bunch of tracks that everyone have already heard.
The end of the year sounds to me as a good deadline because I personally am moving to another town and I can work on my music on my laptop but I need some time to have a net connection on my new place. So the end of the year is I think right.
What seems more important to me is the final number of artists, the length of the tracks because we probably have to limit the period when people can join the idea because not know how much exactly artists will be in will not allow us decide how long our tracks should be to fit in the cd etc.
Anyway I'm really happy to see that thing starting to move
