Dark Ambient - a marginal music genre?
Paolin
Hi there,

I am just wondering. Dark Ambient doesn't seem to be a very popular music genre. When I discovered it for myself I guessed there would be about ... well, a very small audience for this music. Related to other genres, I guess this is still true.
When it comes to these other genres - not necessarily ultra-popular genres like Pop Wink - there are audiences in a completely other order of magnitude (I guess). But still, there are only few artists I would call a favorite of mine, really doing a good job.
In Dark Ambient, it seems to me, there is an other balance of listeners/artists. Few people know about DA, but there are loads of artists which are all potentially favorites of mine.

Can you agree with this impression of mine?
Why, do you think, is that so?

I don't think it's because making great DA-music would be easy; or because every listener tends to become an artist. But maybe I'm really into DA and/or extremely choosey in other genres?
This is something that really confuses me...

As you said, not many people listen DA music....and even less produce it. But, I don't think that in this scene all producers are good. I believe 15% of them are worth remembering and listening their music on a daily basis....but as deeper as I go into the DA release, I find out that there is a lot of really bad DA producers out there. Just like in every music, there are few producers who stand out, rest are just plain copies or untalented wannabe's.

I think, one reason is that there is not really a club scene. Most times I go to parties with Dark Ambient listed as one of the syles to be played, there is no DA at all. Maybe a concept for presenting DA that way has to be invented yet. I talked to a club owner of a quite suiting location (Zoe II in Hamburg) but he was just too cautious about what people would like to hear.

Another reason is that DA artists in my opinion don't tend to be the extroverted type of character. Sure, there are a lot of beginners on myspace, but those projects that have already developed a unique style and a good quality often don't care a lot about publicity. This is both, blessing and curse, for the genre.

Well, maybe I still have to work out a finer sense of identifying good DA...

Of course it?s a marginal genre. You can?t dance to it. And the average DA track is slightly too long to be squeezed in between two radio commercials.

There aren?t that many titties, either.

I think it is music that really goes beyond its origin and mastermind, I mean. I could not care less about names of producers. I can like an artist who released only two tracks in a digital form and hate the most appraised and successful dark ambient producers because I actually know what I will hear when I play their music.

I think having some idea of what impact a particular DA song/soundscape/artist/producer/gig will have on you kills it all. This type of music for me is beyond human, beyond any expectation, it totally depends on the mood and only the sounds matter and what they are capable of creating inside your head.

Sorry for the disruption. My power grid provider installed a smart meter.

Das liegt daran, dass ich überhaupt nur ganz wenige "Bands" im Programm habe. Wink

Ich bin nun regelmäßig hier auf dem Sender. Einige Bands werden gar nicht gespielt. Schade !!!
