Hi all,
I´m very delighted to announce the release of my new official solo album which will be made available on 1st October, 2009.
Some of you may wonder why I´m opening another thread with the same title; it´s a new album, simple as that, which has some ties with the "cambrium" premiere recording of 13th December, 2008 -- which is also available as a CD-R-On-Demand -- but the version released officially here was recorded live in concert on 29th May, 2009, at the annual "Nacht der Klänge" (night of sounds) held at Bielefeld University.
The main difference from the first issue of "cambrium" is that I not only used an ARP 2600 for creating all the electronic sounds but I also added an EMS VCS-3 to the timbral scope in order to populate an acoustic environment of 500 million years ago. You can say that the ARP was used for all the pitched stuff while the EMS allowed me to do extensive live electronic improvisations and live looping which is all the abstract soundscaping in the background.
You can of course order your personal copy directly through me by sending an email to stephen at parsick dot com (no forum PMs, please!), or -- if you don´t want to order it blindly -- you can wait until some distributors have made audio snippets available online to listen to it first. Seine Musik beschreibt Parsick als Doombient, wobei zu fragen ist, ob hier nicht einfach der durchaus passende Begriff Dark Ambient vermieden wird um ein neues Genre zu schaffen. Wie dem auch sei, die zehn Tracks auf Praecambrium bieten solide Klangflächen, die aus vielerlei Schichten zu bestehen scheinen: Es brodelt und rauscht und man fühlt sich in graue Vorzeit versetzt. Track zwei dagegen klingt insofern dynamischer als hier perkussive Momente dazukommen. Atmosphärisch ist das Album durchaus dicht und auch die melodischeren Passagen, die sich später finden, passen ins Gesamtbild. Der Titel des Albums ist durchaus adäquat und lässt an Gottfried Benn denken, in dessen Gedicht Gesänge es heißt: „Oh, dass wir unsere Ur-ur-ahnen wären./Ein Klümpchen Schleim in einem warmen Moor.“
Die Liveaufnahmen aus dem Osnabrücker Planetarium bieten ebenfalls meistens dunkle Klangflächen, die in Passagen noch reduzierter wirken: Da scheinen die Weiten des Weltalls durchaus noch etwas Mysteriöses zu haben, im zweiten Track spürt man fast schon eine latente Bedrohung. Das ist durchaus Musik der Sphären, kosmische Musik, die natürlich als Referenzpunkt eher Lustmord und nicht etwa Ash Ra Tempel hat.

"The least we can say is that Stephen Parsick is in a shady period where the atonal forms of a tetanized music seem to be far from its conceptual priorities. In the same stride as Debris, although less heavy and more atmospheric, Cambrium - Music For Protozoa is a more psychedelic than structured musical journey, depicting the microscopic universe which surrounds us on atonal movements mixed to heavy and full of life musical structures of a reverberant life. Recorded in concert on May 29th, 2009 at the University of Bielefeld for the annual night of sounds, this last realization of the German synthesist is a sound reflection of an effervescent microbiological world. A surprising musical journey where the microscopic life bubbles towards ARP 2600 and VCS-3, synths known for their warm tones to facets as astral as hallucinogenic.
Emerging softly from meanders of a boiling life of metaphoric streaks, Proterozoikum floats in a spectral universe where choirs and caustic breaths flavor a micro organic life of strange luminous parasites who tie themselves to knot as sound jellyfishes. Strange laughter of ash blond witches emanate from this context where subjacent life reigns with color palettes proper to Stephen Parsick. The first stammerings of a world out of control appear on DNA Sequence opening. Spasmodic sequences which collide in a strange merged ballet to dance in a dislocated way such as marionettes that we imagine to be germs, or enzymes, which converge on some point of entry.
An abstracted dance for a microbiological world which spreads its tones among structures so ambient, atonal and atmospheric as we hear on Ekectric Soup Kitchen, Amoeba, Medusa and Radiolaria and lively structures animated by sequential pulsating rhythm as on Tribolite who dances under somber stratas by an arrhythmic flow and the title track which merges on heavy reverberations, while the heaviness’s and the reverberates roundness’s of Urge to Live are similar to the sound vividness of the last Ramp; Debris.
Cerebral journey, abstract or sound exploration of an underlying life, Cambrium - Music For Protozoa presents us a Stephen Parsick in great shape who brings us where he wants to, either to the borders of a spiritual journey where the stellar merges marvelously to a sonorous world that only Parsick can define with a multitude of organic tones which can easily survive in both worlds.

Fans of Lustmordr17;s Where the Black Stars Hang should immediately seek out Stephen Parsickr17;s Cambrium: Music for Protozoa. Continuing on his quest for the ultimate r0;doombientr1; sound, Parsick delves ever deeper into the dark crevasses. r0;Proterozoikumr1; jumps right into the blackness, a swirling vortex of emptiness put to sound. This would be the perfect soundtrack to a bleak sci-fi film. This is hardcore dark ambient and white noise, with normal musical conventions conspicuously absent. r0;DNA Sequencer1; bubbles and churns with a bit more brightness as punchy percussion lends just a touch of electronica to the mix. Back to the stuff of nightmares we go with r0;Electric Soup Kitchen,r1; dark and dank. Song titles like r0;Primordial Glurpr1;, r0;Trilobiter1;, and r0;Amoebar1; aptly portray the primitive yet futuristic sound. I prefer the ones with just a bit of structure to hang onto, like the momentum-building pulsations of r0;Trilotbiter1; and the restless electronic buzzing undercurrent of the title track and r0;Urge to Live.r1; The latter reminds me a lot of the dark, industrial take on Berlin school that Redshift created on Down Time. If you like dark, organic ambient from Robert Rich or Steve Roach, you will love Cambrium.

Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Künstlern, die in ihrem Schaffen immer experimenteller/ innovativer werden, kehrt Stephen Parsick auf “Cambrium” zur Ursprünglichkeit zurück und dies nicht nur im Bezug auf seine Tonkunst, sondern auch im inhaltlichen Kontext, wofür die Erdzeituhr im Botanischen Garten von Bielefeld als Inspirationsquelle diente.
Nach der ersten Fassung von “Cambrium”, welche nur auf Bestellung (CD-R Pressung) erhältlich war, veröffentlicht Stephen Parsick das Opus erneut als CD über sein Label doombient.music, welche sich über verschiedene Vertriebswege beziehen lässt.
Mittels der Erdzeituhr lässt sich die Entstehung der Geschichte hervorragend vermitteln, welche in Bielfeld in 24 Phasen 4,5 Millionen Jahre veranschaulicht und Stephen Parsick’s Oeuvre “Cambrium” inhaltlich prägt, das nach dem Zeitalter Benennung fand, wo das Leben auf unserem Planeten den Durchbruch schaffte und sich eine Vielfalt kleiner Wirbelloser Tiere entwickelte (Kambrische Explosion). Insgesamt eine sehr spannende Thematik, die bisher nur wenig in der Musik verarbeitet wurde, wodurch “Cambrium” an zusätzlicher Eigenständigkeit gewinnt.
Stephen Parsick spielte im Dezember 2008 (Planetarium Bochum) die Premiere von “Cambrium”, welche die Erstausgabe auf CD-R bildet & anders klingt als die Variante auf CD, die der Künstler aus mehr als drei Stunden Material zusammenstellte, das er auf der “Nacht der Klänge” am 29.05.2009 an der Bielefelder Universität aufzeichnete. Zur Erschaffung von “Cambrium” verwendete der Ruhrgebietler einen arp 2600 Synthesizer + Sequenzer & einen ems vcs-3 mk. 1 (auch bekannt als “the putney”), die einen Gesamtsound erzeugen, der eine undurchdringliche Symbiose aus Space- & Dark Ambient darstellt. Im Besonderen bestechen die 10 Tondokumente durch vielseitige Atmosphären, welche beim ersten Hören in ihren Bann ziehen und nicht mehr loslassen. Auch mag die Einstreuung von vereinzelter Rhythmik gefallen, die zur Auflockerung der Gesamtheit beträgt, welche zu keiner Sekunde Langeweile oder Langatmigkeit aufweist! Kopfkinofetischisten dürfen sich diese spannende Vorführung von Stephen Parsick nicht entgehen lassen, welche Live im Planetarium oder Daheim von Konserve “Zeit & Raum” außer Kraft setzt – Wahnsinn!
“Cambrium” gehört zu den komplexen “Meisterwerken” von Stephen Parsick, weshalb die Benennung eines Anspieltipps zugunsten der Empfehlung “Kaufen!” entfällt.
Fazit:
Stephen Parsick publiziert mit “Cambrium” ein Highlight für Freunde der komplexen Space- & Dark Ambient Sounds, welches einmal mehr den Beweis antritt, dass er zu den eigenständigsten wie perfektesten seiner Zunft gehört – meine absolute Empfehlung! Wer in diesem Genre High End erleben möchte, kommt an “Cambrium” von Stephen Parsick nicht vorbei – Punkt!

Stephen Parsick is a busy man. Apart from his solo career he is also a member of [r16;ramp]. Debuting in 1998 (as RAMP) with Nodular (444 Oscillators) on Manikin Records they obtained themselves a place between the so called Berliner Schule (Berlin School) sound. Cosmic space sounds with sequencers , a bit like the old Tangerine Dream. Together with Frank Makowski [r16;ramp] made a couple of excellent albums where one could hear the evolution to a more and more darker sound, and the invention of the term Doombient. Makowski and Parsick split up, and Parsick took the name [r16;ramp] with him.
Solo became Parsick more active and produced a string of cdr17;s and cdrr17;s. One of these solo albums was Hoellenengel, which in sound was some sort of combination between Vangelis and Lustmord. The cdrr17;s were all deep and dark ambient, or doombientr30;..and most in a limited edition of just 25 copies.
And now 2 new cdr17;s saw the light of day, one new [r16;ramp] (Debris) and a new solo disc called Cambrium; Music For Protozoa. I picked the solo album for this review, but the fact remains that both albums are the work of Stephen solo. And this work is amazing. On Cambrium you will experience a journey through dark space. Actually itr17;s a nice combination of the old [r16;ramp] and the newer dark sound. And we are talking analogue here: the ARP 2600 synthesizers and sequencers, the Putney synth, various analogue processors, and some digital sampling systems. Occasionally the sound of a delicious sequencer , but itr17;s too dark and too slow to be Berlin School. Itr17;s the combination between these both worlds that makes it all so exciting here. Where most dark ambient acts make music from graves is this music from space and makes it one of the best electronic albums of the past year.
Every electronics and space lover should have this album, this is space music as it should be; doombient. And mark the words in the booklet: Thanks for buying this album and even bigger thanks for not uploading it illegally on the internet. Zwei Jahre sind ins Land gegangen, seit Stephen Parsick, der auch als [r17;ramp] Musik macht, in Erscheinung getreten ist. Musikalisch stellt Stephen mit seiner Musik eher die dunkle, düstere Variante der elektronischen Musik dar, die man wohl als Doomambient bezeichnen könnte, so wie auch sein eigenes Label benannt ist. Sein letztes Album hieß rTraces Of The Past Reduxr0; und kam im Jahr 2007 heraus.
Das neue Werk heißt rCambrium r11; Music For Protozoar0; und erschien zeitgleich mit seinem neuen [r17;ramp]-Werk rDebrisr0; Anfang Oktober 2009. Damit holt Stephen im Herbst 2009 gleich zu einem Doppelschlag aus.
rDas musikalische Konzept zu diesem Album entstand bereits im September 2007, als Stephen Parsick mit der Idee zu spielen begann, mittels nur einiger weniger Instrumente aus der Frühzeit der elektronischen Musik zu den Wurzeln dieser Musikform zurückzukehren.r0; Auf dem Album rElectric Trickr0; von Cosmic Hoffmann hatte er bereits 2005 ebenfalls den Weg in die Frühphase der elektronischen Musik zusammen mit Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock gewagt. rInspiriert von der Erdzeituhr im Botanischen Garten Bielefeld begann Parsick die Frühzeit unseres Planeten musikalisch und klanglich zu illustrieren.r0;
Das Ergebnis ist das Werk rCambriumr0; das bereits sein Livedebüt im Dezember 2008 im Bochumer Planetarium hatte, bei dem die Musik vom Publikum begeistert aufgenommen wurde.
Unterteilt ist das Werk in zehn Stücke, die eine Einheit bilden. Los geht es mit rProterozoikumr0;, das zunächst sehr leise beginnt. Ich glaubte zu Beginn der Scheibe, ich hätte sie gar nicht gestartet, da ich in den ersten Sekunden keinen Ton hörte. Doch dann schiebt sich eine Synthieatmo aus dem Hintergrund nach vorne und erzeugt eine spaceartige Stimmung. Da ziehen Klänge vorbei, es rauscht, es zirpt und die Tonlagen ändern sich nur spärlich. Das sind Ambientdrones der etwas düsteren Form, die im Kopf eine Reise durchs All suggerieren.
Erst im zweiten Stück kommen so langsam Strukturen auf, die rhythmisch und auch harmonisch, aber immer noch sehr technologisch oder sphärisch klingen. Von Melodielinien ist aber weit und breit nicht zu hören. Und so geht es auf dem Album auch strikt weiter. Melodien findet man nicht, dafür aber recht umfangreiche Stimmungs- und Klangbilder, die sich nur langsam verändern und entwickeln. Da perlt es mal, dann rauscht es nur vor sich hin. Ambientfreunde, die den Fokus auf reine Klangskulpturen legen, werden hier bestens bedient.
Erst im fünften Stück rTrilobiter0; kommen erstmals Sequenzerrhythmen auf, die zunächst noch sehr verhalten im Hintergrund bleiben, im Laufe der Zeit aber mehr an Dynamik gewinnen. Und im siebten Track, dem Titelstück kommen dann ansatzweise Rhythmen heraus, die man so auch von Ian Boddy kennt. Das ist dann absolut hypnotisch, wenn auch nicht so druckvoll wie bei Boddy. Und weitere zwei Stücke später (rUrge To Liver0 gibt es dann wieder rhythmisches zu berichten, das eine gewisse Faszination auf mich hat. Dazwischen finden sich aber immer wieder diese lang gezogenen, minimalistischen Ambientparts, die sich nur langsam entwickeln.
Mit rCambriumr0; hat Stephen Parsick wieder ein Doomambient-Werk geschaffen, das hauptsächlich auf Klangskulpturen aufbaut und gelegentlich mit rhythmischen Elementen versehen wurde. Wer auf diese Art der elektronischen Musik steht, der bekommt wieder reichlich Stoff für sein Kopfkino. Für meinen Geschmack ist diese Art der Musik aber etwas zu minimalistisch.

STEPHEN PARSICK: Cambrium (Music for Protozoa) (CD on Parsick Music)
This CD from 2009 offers 68 minutes of dark ambient electronic music.
Parsick's goal with this music is to approximate a soundtrack for a primeval environment in which protozoa evolve into more complex lifeforms, exemplified by the manner in which the auralscape progresses from minimal to substantial. In this regard, the result is highly engaging.
Ethereal textures rise into play, already tinged with haunting timbre that evokes a prehistoric landscape. Auxiliary tones flitter through the mix, embellishing the auralscape into an environmental scope. The wind cascading through volcanic rock formations. Pools of slimy water shimmering under moonlight. A paranormal drone wafting on the breeze, conveying the presence of evolutionary impetus waiting to occur.
Blooping electronics lend agitation to the flow, introducing hints of rhythmic pittering to the sonic environs. Tonal winds creep through these tempos, generating a sense of movement, as if the rhythms are a palpable cloud traveling across the wasteland. Gradually, a melodic demeanor emerges from the harmonic climate, but its duration is fleeting, eventually swallowed by the electronic tempest until it surfaces again later on. This surge and recession plays a crucial role in the music's overall structure.
As much as an evolutionary process is approximated by this tuneage, the music also achieves a distinct semblance of spatial motion. The listener is carried along for the growth and change, not just as a witness but becoming a participant, although this participation occurs purely on a psychic level.
Shorn of all these scientific metaphors, the music is darkly ambient but with a seething understated intensity that threatens to burst forth at every second. Tones and waves mesh to establish a streaming tension that is enhanced by the blooping tempos. Moody passages escalate into pulsating pinnacles of sober delight.
The music on this release (performed live on May 29, 2009, during the annual "nacht der klange" at Bielefeld University in Germany) is a revised version of music found on the Cambrium download-only release from 2008. The differences are multifold, running the gamut from a different performance to the inclusion of an EMS VCS-3 mk.1 synthesizer (aka "the putney" for the 2009 concert.
